If there was a good place to hear the news in 1970 that the Beatles were breaking up, it would have been behind the wheel of an Olds 442, much like this one. From my perspective, it would have also been a much better seat to sit in than the driver’s seat of the Apollo 13 space capsule. Hey, if something goes wrong in the 442, you can just pull over. Just try finding a filling station 150,000 miles above the earth’s surface; it just ain’t going to happen.
Besides, the 1970 442 has pretty much become a major muscle car classic. So that makes it a great place to not just sit, but to also make excessive tire smoke. This frame off restoration is said to have been recently painted what looks to be a metallic goldish brown, or perhaps a brownish gold, deep gold (?)…not sure. Either way it’s a good color for this car and it really pops against the black details and vinyl top.
Seller states that it is all matching numbers with new floor pans, new trunk pan, a rebuilt engine with a 600 HP Fitech fuel injection system and rebuilt transmission with Hurst shifter. It comes with the W-30 package which gave this monster a 455 cubic inch V8 conservatively rated at the time of manufacture 370 HP (it was actually more like a pinch over 400), and a staggering 500 lb-ft of torque. All wrapped up in a recently re-swathed black leather interior bow.
The 1970 442 was the absolute pinnacle of Oldsmobile’s muscle car offerings. You may wish to get yourself one before they double in price again, with many examples in the 6-figure range. This one, with an ask of $50K and clean title in hand, may be someone’s dream come true, and for the rest of us, just a dream.
